Four years ago, we released what many still consider one of the finest sandalwood oils ever offered publicly. It was declared limited. It sold out within months. Those who got it will not sell it as it’s becoming impossible to get, or even get something remotely like it. Since then, we have been asked almost daily one simple question. When will The Perfumist offer sandalwood oil again
Our answer remained consistent. When we find something equal or better.
For over a year, we searched relentlessly. We evaluated more than one hundred distillations. Steam distilled oils, CO2 extracts, North Indian, South Indian, blended origins, experimental batches, and even combinations of Indian and Australian sandalwood.
None met our standard.
Not one.
Our master perfumist, Mr. Ali Attar, was not looking for volume or availability. He was looking for something very specific. A profile that cannot be manufactured or engineered. Notes that only exist in the oldest, naturally matured sandalwood trees of Mysore. You simply can’t synthetize 100 years of nature’s work in a machine,
Eventually, the path became clear. Instead of searching for what already exists, we decided to create it. The old saying still hold if you want something done right do it yourself.
THE DISTILLATION
This oil is the result of a direct collaboration with one of the largest and most respected producers of the highest quality sandalwood in India.
Together, we selected the finest raw materials from mature Mysore trees and committed to distilling them using the same traditional methods practiced hundreds of years ago.
No modern shortcuts. No industrial acceleration. No compromise in process. No this is not the commercial type you get from other vendors online.
The wood was carefully selected from the inner core of aged trees, where the oil concentration and aromatic complexity reach their highest expression. The distillation was carried out slowly and deliberately, following traditional temperature control and extraction rhythms rarely practiced today due to their inefficiency.
This is not a commercial distillation. This is a heritage reconstruction.
THE MATERIAL
100% pure Indian Mysore sandalwood oil Santalum album. Steam distilled using traditional methods. From the heart of the wood 50% center trunk. Unmixed, undiluted, untreated
No enhancement. No dilution. No blending. No coloring.
Only pure oil, extracted with maximum possible concentration and integrity.
Due to decades of overharvesting and environmental pressure, true Mysore sandalwood is heavily regulated and classified as vulnerable. Access to material of this quality is extremely limited and tightly controlled.
This is not plantation sandalwood. This is not blended sandalwood. This is not modern mass production. This is true Mysore sandal oil.
CATEGORY CLASSIFICATION
Extinct – Rarest – Cannot be found anymore
While this oil has been newly distilled, the quality and profile it represents belong to a category that is disappearing rapidly. Oils of this caliber are becoming increasingly unattainable due to restrictions, environmental factors, and the rarity of suitable trees.
Only a fraction of a small fraction the global population will ever experience sandalwood at this level.
THE OLFACTORY EXPERIENCE
Opening
An immediate presence of pure sandalwood. Creamy, rich, and luminous. Layers of soft cedar, gentle smoke, subtle vanilla, and faint fruit tones unfold naturally clean and vivid.
Heart
The composition deepens into warm, meditative wood. Hints of incense, brown sugar, and light tobacco emerge, creating a smooth and grounding experience.
Dry down
A long lasting, enveloping finish. Honeyed sweetness, soft tobacco, delicate cherry undertones, and faint floral nuances resting on a deep sandalwood base. Woody aromatic and herba accord near the skin muskiness with distinguished powdery note.
This is not a simple woody note. This is depth, evolution, and structure in its purest form.
SIGNIFICANCE
Sandalwood has been revered for centuries across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. Known as Chandan, it has been used in temples, meditation, rituals, and royal ceremonies. It is the oil of yogis, saints, scholars, and rulers. Many believe it enhances clarity, calms the mind, and elevates awareness. Whether approached spiritually or olfactorily, its importance is unmatched.
WHY THIS IS DIFFERENT
Most sandalwood oils on the market today are diluted, blended, or sourced from younger plantation trees. Even when labeled pure, they rarely achieve the depth, richness, and complexity found in true Mysore distillations.
We eliminated those limitations.
By working directly at the source, collaborating with top level producers, and controlling the distillation process ourselves, we ensured that this oil reflects the highest possible standard without compromise. PRESENTATION
Offered in extremely limited quantity. Hand filled and prepared individually. Every bottle is inspected and approved by our master perfumist. Please allow seven to ten working days for preparation, as each order is handled entirely by hand.
