What makes it unique
Description
Three of the rarest, unopened, untouched musk pods—preserved through time and passed down over generations.
These are completely pure Tonkin musk pods, historically known as the finest material ever used in perfume oils. For centuries, this type of musk was reserved for kings, sultans, and royalty.
This is the highest level of musk. Today, it’s extinct.
People may talk about it, but very few have ever smelled the real thing—especially in its full, original form as a dry, unopened pod. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
These particular pods are over 300 years old. They’ve been passed down through several generations in our family. Deciding what to do with them wasn’t easy. We don’t know how they were originally sourced, and it’s very likely they came from hunted animals—adding another layer of complexity.
But it’s important to understand the context. Over 300 years ago—long before industrial companies and global perfume brands pushed certain deer species to the edge of extinction—local hunters hunted for survival. When they found musk, they kept it. In places like Siberia, Mongolia, the mountains of Tibet, and the jungles of Vietnam, people lived in harsh conditions. They survived this way for centuries—and some still do today. Musk wasn’t mainly used in perfumes back then. It was primarily used in alternative medicine, a practice that continues in many cultures even now.
Musk was also regarded as sacred. It was believed to protect against misfortune and negative energy and was used as a totem or spiritual charm. This belief still exists in many cultures and traditional systems.
We made a choice. We could have used these pods to make perfumes—very exclusive ones. But instead, we decided to share them with the world. We want other natural perfumers and artisan makers to have access to this rare material. Our goal is to pass on our heritage and allow others in the perfume community to work with real, untouched musk of the highest quality.
Our family has been involved in musk for over 300 years. Now, it’s time to let other creators and artists use this incredible material to express their own vision and offer it to the world.
Musk doesn’t just get better with age—it evolves.
Not many people know that it takes at least two years to fully and naturally dry a musk pod before it can be used in perfumery. That’s the minimum. To achieve the highest level of quality, you typically wait five to seven years.
In traditional Chinese medicine and other alternative systems in India and Tibet, aged musk is considered the best. For healing purposes, musk is often recommended to be over ten years old. Aging removes some of the more animalic, barnyard-like notes. The pod becomes drier, easier to handle, and much better for blending and making oils.
People often ask: is musk perishable?
The answer is no. Musk is one of the few natural substances that can last indefinitely. It doesn’t spoil. In fact, it continues to change and improve. Ask herbalists in China, attar makers in Kashmir, or Vedic experts in India—they’ll all tell you the same thing: musk is eternal, and in its own way, alive.
So, what should you expect from a musk pod that’s over 300 years old?
This is not a finished perfume. If you are not a trained perfumer, scent maker, or experienced herbalist, we will not sell this item to you. It is not for beginners or casual users. This is one of the rarest raw materials on earth—preserved through generations and of unmatched purity and quality.
Please do not ask if it can be used to make candles or body creams.
We will block any such inquiries.
We are listing three pods. They are priced well below what something like this would normally cost—if anyone were even willing to part with such a valuable item. We’re doing this to give young artists and perfumers a chance to work with authentic musk and bring their creative projects to life.
To give you an idea of its value:
Musk oil recipes typically use 1–3 grams of musk per 100 grams of oil, often blended with rose or sandalwood. Even a small pod can yield 700 milliliters to one liter of oil. That’s more than enough to recover your cost, pay for ingredients, and make a strong return.
This is our way of supporting the natural perfume community and helping artisan makers access materials that are otherwise nearly impossible to find.
Due to international regulations, customs controls, and laws regarding animal-derived materials, this item will only be shipped within the United States and a few select countries.
If you live outside the U.S., please contact us before purchasing to confirm whether shipping is possible to your location.
Enjoy—and have a wonderfully musky day!
