Indian Assam Kasturi musk is indisputably one of the best musks in the world. Usually described as the most lustful and enticing, there is just something about this musk that set it apart from all the others and that is the heat. Yes, it’s strange and beautiful how different kinds of musk have different profiles and scent accords but this one has a totally different element; musk is almost always associated with the element of earth, with the ground and the jungle but this is surprisingly hot; you can actually feel the heat coming out of it when you smell it, and strangely enough, this will be the exact opposite after wearing it or having it on the skin for a short while as it will change dramatically to a very cold oil.
As Mr. Ali Attar mentions “In the diaries and records of my grandfather when he made this oil, he mentioned that he purchased this musk (as pods) from an old Guru (shaman or herbal doctor) from the region of Assam and that person told him that this musk can equally be used as a medicine or a perfume, but if it was made by a righteous and dedicated man it will be both a medicine and a perfume as “musk will give you as much as you give to musk”. That sentence of wisdom from that guru dramatically affected my grandfather and became his favorite slogan and he passed it down as a standard and a mantra - that’s one of the reasons why we treat musk differently and it’s always on the very top shelves anywhere we have perfumes or oils.”
The first nose:
Hot spices, deep dark jungle, earth, oud, trees, and sandalwood. Very powerful and maybe a little intimidating but that is to be expected from a pure musk oil made with the original Arabic attar recipe and left to beautifully age and mature for more than 100 years. Don’t let the heat or the power scare you it’s a test to keep away the faint hearted and those who haven’t reached the maturity and understanding of natural perfumery.
The opening is deep woody, musky with a spicy and sweet note, dominant black pepper, rose, sandalwood, hints of cardamom and glove; if I had to describe it in one word it would be “intoxicating”.
The dry down: after few minutes the dry down is both unique and completely different from the opening, as the dry down will radically change to a cold breezy, shiny scent, with notes of leather, incense and Indian rose, clean and smooth.
